The design mind behind Principle Living’s human-centred communities

As Australian downsizers become increasingly independent and lifestyle-driven, Principle Living continues leading with thoughtful architecture and human-centred design across its communities in the Hunter region.

This philosophy was reinforced at last month’s Crafting Your Retirement event, whereArchitect and Interior Designer Angelique Perak shared insights into the role purposeful design plays in shaping the way people experience their day-to-day.

“This generation is savvier and much more willing to self-advocate, so the conversation is shifting more towards ‘right-sizing’ rather than ‘downsizing,” Angelique said.

“People want to maintain flexibility within the home. They want spaces that support hobbies, host guests or simply to have a stronger connection to their surroundings. Either way, adaptability is important.”

As Director of Studio Duo and a long-term collaborator of Principle Living, Angelique has worked alongside the business to develop meaningful design elements at communities including Blueheath at The Bower in Medowie and upcoming land lease community, The Hermitage Hunter Valley.

Drawing on her experience across commercial, residential and aged care design, Angelique focuses on meeting technical requirements while also understanding how homes need to support people through different stages of life as priorities evolve.

This is reflected throughout Principle Living residences, where floor plans are intentionally varied, allowing homeowners to choose spaces that suit their individual needs rather than conforming to a one-size-fits-all model.

“There are certain elements within design that can improve confidence, reduce confusion and help people navigate spaces more comfortably as they age,” she said.

“It’s not always obvious things. Sometimes it’s about avoiding monotony, improving way finding or creating settings that feel intuitive and welcoming without being clinical.”

From community connections and walkability through to shared spaces such as workshops, bowling greens and community centres, Principle Living communities are designed to support long-term wellbeing, independence and dignity.

Inside residences, homeowners can enjoy features such as generously-sized bedrooms, well designed kitchens and laundries with ample storage, light filled living spaces, wide doorways and sizeable alfresco areas.

At Principle Living, good design has never been solely about finishes or colour palettes. It’s about creating environments that work seamlessly for residents over time and allow for ageing in place.
