A community built by hand

Blueheath’s shared workshop iscproving to be much more than a place for projects at the Medowie community, with residents using the space to share skills, lend a hand and build the friendships that define life in the village.

For resident Donal McIntyre, the workshop captures everything he loves about living at Blueheath. It brings neighbours together, encourages residents to stay active and creates opportunities to help one another, whether that’s repairing a treasured family heirloom, learning a new skill or simply enjoying good company.

Donal and his wife Anne moved to Blueheath almost three years ago after selling their 108-acre property near Belford. Looking to downsize without compromising on lifestyle, they were drawn to the community’s village feel and welcoming atmosphere.

“We chose Blueheath because the timing was right. Looking after the house and property was becoming too much work and we wanted somewhere we could enjoy life more,” Donal said.

The couple quickly embraced community life. Anne joined the Residents’ Committee and became actively involved in social activities and the Blueheath Butterflies volunteer group.Donal can often be found with the men having a hit of golf or tinkering in the community workshop alongside fellow resident Chris, who has helped transform the space into a useful hub for residents.

“Chris has really been the driving force behind the workshop,” Donal said.

“He’s organised equipment, made sure everything is safe, created signage for the machines and helps induct new residents so they can confidently use the space. He’s done a fantastic job.”

A lifelong handyman who built his own family home in Belford, Donal was naturally drawn to the workshop once the pair were settled in.

“I’ve always been hands-on,” he said.

“I’ve always made my own things. If I needed something, I’d rather buy the equipment and build it myself than buy it new.”

Today, residents use the workshop for everything from woodworking and furniture restoration to repairs and creative projects. Donal enjoys teaching others how to use the lathe and laser engraver, while donated tools and equipment ensure the space is a hub of convenience for everyone.

“One resident restored a rocking chair that had belonged to her grandfather, while another refinished an old table,” Donal said.

“If someone needs something repaired, we’ll help them. It’s there for everyone.”

Blueheath’s workshop reflects Principle Living’s focus on creating communities that support independent living. Equipped with a growing selection of tools and machinery, the shared space gives residents the freedom to complete repairs, maintenance and creative projects without leaving the village, while benefiting from the knowledge and support of their neighbours.

With only a handful of homes remaining, now could be the time to experience the lifestyle that makes Blueheath at The Bower so special. From vibrant social activities and resident-led groups to shared spaces like the community workshop, Blueheath offers much more than a place to live.
