A new partnership between Blueheath and BaptistCare is already changing how residents access aged care, with Sharon Grover and her husband, Kerry, using the service to gain the support they need to continue living independently.

Launched last June, the community can learn all about BaptistCare services each Wednesday, as Care Facilitator Raj visits residents to connect them with the support that best meets their unique needs and help them navigate systems such as the Australian Government service, My Aged Care.

With more than 11 years’ experience in aged care and community services, Raj said his passion comes from helping people maintain their independence while making new processes much easier to understand.

“Many older people find today’s technology overwhelming and that can stop them from accessing the support they’re entitled to,” Raj said.

“Even after they’ve been approved for services,knowing what to do next can feel complicated.”

“My role isto provide guidance and reassurance, helping residents navigate My Aged Careand understand the steps involved so they can access the resources they needand continue living independently.”

For Blueheath resident Sharon, having BaptistCare now available within the community has been beneficial for both her and her husband, Kerry, who became paraplegic following an accident before the couple moved in four-and -a-half years ago.

“They come in and help him get ready for his day five days per week. Raj is lovely and it’s great to see Kerry enjoying the service,” Sharon said.

“It works for us because it means Kerry can continue spending time doing what he enjoys most, including attending the Raymond Terrace Men’s Shed each week and helping residents run the raffles at Blueheath’s happy hour each Friday.”

Raj said one of the most rewarding parts of his role is seeing residents become more confident.

“Every person deserves to feel valued, respected and supported, especially as they navigate changes that come with ageing,” he said.

“By spending time with residents, explaining processes in a simple way, and guiding them through referrals and accessing services, I’ve been able to help people feel more confident and comfortable seeking support.”

“It’s great to see Kerry is really thriving at Blueheath and I’m pleased to be involved with that.”

While the practical support has made daily lifeeasier, Sharon said it also means she and Kerry can continue enjoying the community they fell in love with.

“When we drove in, Blueheath just hugged us,” Sharon said.

“It’s a beautiful place. The community is lovely, the homes are lovely, the streets are wide and the gardens are beautiful. If someone’s having coffee, you just join in. Everyone supports each other.”

For residents like Sharon and Kerry, the partnership with BaptistCare is helping remove barriers to aged care by bringing trusted guidance and personalised support directly into the community. It means residents can spend less time navigating the system and more time enjoying the lifestyle, friendships and sense of belonging that make Blueheath such a special place to live.
